George Walter Dawson was born in Andover, MA. He attended the Massachusetts Normal Art School and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. An accomplished watercolorist, he served as president and founding member of the Philadelphia Water Color Club, and was a member of the Chicago Water Color Club. For many years he was Professor of Drawing at the University of Pennsylvania. His biographical details remain sketchy, but he was certainly well-placed in Philadelphia to have known and possibly taught a number of figures who went on to distinguished careers. This strongly Japanese-influenced painting is dedicated to Thornton and Amy Oakley, artists who wrote and illustrated books together. Thornton Oakley, eleven years Dawson's junior, who became a major American magazine illustrator, studied at the University of Pennsylvania before training with Howard Pyle. Both Dawson and Oakley were members of the Philadelphia Water Color Club.
