Born in Brooklyn, New York in 1857, Ernest Albert displayed artistic talent early on and received the Graham Art Medal at age 15 while studying at the Brooklyn Art Institute. His early success as an illustrator, shows purely in this rare detailed (perhaps French or European) Gem. Albert went to St. Louis in 1880 and five years later moved to Chicago. In 1892, he was involved with the Colombian Exposition in Chicago and helped found the American Society of Scenic Painters there. At the pinnacle of his career in 1905, he began to withdrew from theater work and turned more and more to canvas painting until he eventually devoted all of his time to painting landscapes of Old Lyme, Connecticut, Monhegan Island, Maine, as well as a few scenes on the West Coast. He was elected an Associate of the National Academy of Design in 1922. His artwork is housed in the Florence Griswold Museum in Old Lyme, CT and in the Wadsworth Atheneum, Hartford, CT.
