    19-5/8 x 23-1/2 inches (49.8 x 59.7 cm)
Signed and dated lower right: Emil Carlsen 05

Graham Williford's fondness for American Tonalism led him to admire the work of Emil Carlsen. This blond and luminous landscape was the most important work by Carlsen in his collection, although we do not know when and where he acquired it since, as Arthur Phelan noted, "his sister burned years of his checkbooks, which would have been a great addition [to] the provenances in this catalog." In addition to this landscape, Williford also owned two small figurative works by Carlsen which sold in the first Williford painting sale at Heritage Auctions, May 15, 2012--an early portrait of a young woman from the 1880s (lot 64422) and a 1921 oil study of a figure in a hat seen from behind (lot 64530). This beautifully-designed landscape in a nearly-square format, with its low horizon, high active sky, and deep blue water carving a path between two banks of trees was a spot Carlsen explored a number of times. A painting of the same locale with somewhat deeper coloration also from 1905 sold through Phillips, New York, May 21, 2002, lot 48.

It would indeed have been much simpler to work with a local auction house, and we had local options. But we never once regretted going with Heritage.
