    Emil Bisttram's earliest success was with the watercolor medium. In 1924 he was awarded first prize at the Pennsylvania Watercolor Club. In 1925 and 1926 he won first prize each year in the Pennsylvania Watercolor Club's international. In 1927 he was invited to exhibit at the New York Watercolor Club where he was awarded a purchase prize. That same year he was given a one man show at the Buffalo Art Museum. Success in the medium continued and in 1928 he was invited to exhibit in the Venice Biennale, was given a one man exhibit at the Philadelphia Art Alliance, and was given a one man exhibit at the Boston Art Association. In 1931, based on his solid achievements, in the medium of watercolor as well as oil painting, Bisttram was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship.
