The American Impressionist Edward Potthast began his artistic career as a lithographer and an illustrator for Harper's, Scribner's, and Century. Born in Cincinnati, he adopted an early style influenced by the Munich School with its continuation of the Dutch tradition. While traveling in France in 1889, however, he was exposed to the work of the Grez artists' colony, recognized for their free palettes, spontaneous brushwork, and primacy of light. This impacted Potthast so dramatically that he permanently converted to the Impressionist style and within the year was exhibiting his first Impressionist canvas, Sunshine, at the Paris Salon of 1889.

After returning to America, Potthast moved to New York in 1895, and his subject matter shifted to the coastal and beach scenes of New England. This painting, A Family Outing, is an example of this new American subject matter, as well as a wonderful representation of Potthast's bright and cheerful rendering of a family holiday. His brushwork is quick, fluid, and loose, which enabled him to capture both the movement of the ocean and the intensity of midday light. In 1906, he was named an Academician, and his works are now featured in the Cincinnati Art Museum, Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Brooklyn Museum of Art, The Art Institute of Chicago, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.

This painting will be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonné by Mary Ran.

    Estimate: $300,000 - $400,000.
