Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum, Canyon, Texas, (and elsewhere), "Texas Impressionism: Branding with Brushstroke and Color, 1885-1935," April 7-September 3, 2012.

English immigrant, Dawson Dawson-Watson began living part-time in San Antonio, Texas in 1917 after teaching art in New York and Missouri for over a decade. Dawson-Watson officially settled in San Antonio in 1926 in order to compete in the Texas Wildflower Exhibition where he won the first national prize. He would continue to exhibit successfully in the North America as he previously did in Europe -- gathering accolades from the Royal Academy in London, 1886 and the Paris Salon, 1888 to the Southern Arts League, 1931 and Mississippi Art Association, 1930. He is best known for his impressionist landscapes of West Texas and the Texas Hill Country. In this work from before his time in Texas, Dawson-Watson appears to have been inspired by Claude Monet's Haystacks. He utilizes quick, thick brushstrokes to mimic the jumbled layers of sun-drenched hay. The varying, rich shades of golden ochre radiate a feeling of lavish abundance.
