AUGUSTUS DUNBIER (American 1888-1977)
    A Texas Mission
    Oil on canvas
    19.5in. x 15.5in.

Augustus Dunbier was one of Nebraska's most successful and influential artists and teachers. He was born near Shelby, Nebraska and spent most of his life in Omaha where he was an established painter of landscapes and portraits. Dunbier began his art training at the Art Institute of Chicago and later at the Dusseldorf Academy in Germany. He was later influenced by Impressionism with its light color palette and loose brushwork. Upon his return to America, Dunbier worked for a short period with fellow Nebraska artists Robert Henri and Robert Spencer.

While Dunbier made his living primarily as a portrait painter, his favorite subject was the landscape. His friend Walter Ufer persuaded Dunbier to visit Taos, New Mexico in the summer of 1916. Eventually, Dunbier became friends with all of the Taos artists especially Ufer and Ernest Couse. Dunbier returned to the southwest seasonally for the rest of his life.
