Description

    ANGEL ZÁRRAGA (Mexican, 1886-1946)
    The Annunciation
    Oil on canvas
    21-1/4 x 25-3/4 inches (54.0 x 65.4 cm)
Signed and dated lower right: Angel ZARRAGA 19?6

Angel Zárraga studied in the National Preparatory School in Mexico City and contributed to the magazine Revista Moderna, the voice of Modernism in Mexico. Zárraga also studied at the National School of Fine Arts with Deigo Rivera (1886-1957) and Saturino Herran (1887-1918). Following his studies and with the support of his family he left for France where he would remain for over thirty years. While in France he painted murals in the Castle of Vert Coeur and, in 1927, decorated the Mexican Legation in Paris.

By 1921, Zárraga completely embraced the cubist theories of Paul Cézanne (1839-1906). Zárraga breaks from representational painting by identifying spheres and cones of light rather than two dimensional planes. The formal composition is further enhanced by the use of bright blues, greens, yellows, and reds. Each field of color thus represents a separate plane. Cézanne's later paintings also utilize this style. The inclusion of the house and basket of fruit at the lower left further disrupt the arrangement of the composition.

A study of this work, The Annunciation, sold at Bonham's in London, on November 2, 2004, lot number 148.

    Estimate: $70,000 - $90,000.
