Fauve Landscape, circa 1914 - 1916

Property of a Gentleman
Alfred Mauer, the pioneering modernist, exhibited with Stieglitz in New York in 1909-10, emulating the colorism of French Fauve painters and the pictorial conventions of Cézanne. This spontaneous exercise in Fauve brushwork and Cézannesque composition seems to have been executed shortly after the artist ended his extended stay in Paris and resettled in New York in 1914.
