Alexander Young Jackson was a founding member of The Group of Seven, a loosely knit society of Canadian painters who were determined to paint the Canadian identity. His revolutionary style captured the vastness of the wild landscape - the loneliness of the solitary northland. The basis was the bare, never changing Precambrian rock of the Canadian shield. As in this oil sketch, he characteristically used neutral grey, intermediate tones, accented by vivid colours, and darker lines.

Born in Montreal, he studied in France before being asked to join a group of artists in Toronto. Using Toronto as a base, the artists traveled Canada and developed a cult of Canadianism. Jackson spoke fluent French as a second language, and made an annual pilgrimage in early spring back to Quebec and to the Gaspe to document that region that was quickly changing. There he was known as Pere Raquette due to his use of snowshoes while painting outside in the still snowy landscape. Petite Riviere is a tiny town in the Gaspe area of Nova Scotia. A.Y.Jackson divided his compositions into three elements; rocks, trees, and sky. This composition on board captures the moody and expressionistic nature that defined his style.
