DescriptionALEXANDER JOHN DRYSDALE (American, 1870-1934)
Louisiana Bayou, 1913
Oil on canvas
Signed and dated lower right: A.J. Drysdale / 1913
30-1/4 x 30-1/4 inches (76.8 x 76.8 cm)
Painter known for Tonalist landscapes of Southern marshes, bayous, and moss laden trees. Drysdale began his studies at the Southern Art Union in New Orleans. From there, he moved to New York City to study under Robert Henri, George Inness, and William Merritt Chase at the Art Students League. Upon his return to New Orleans, he settled into his characteristic style. Drysdale developed his own technique to convey the hazy depths of the Louisiana bayou region by diluting oil paint in kerosene and applying it to board with cotton balls and brushes.
Repairs with overpainting on the upper part of the taller tree on the right side, and in five small areas on the large tree to the left. All visible under UV light. Strengthening on the canvas verso, plus a small patch. Surface grime and yellowing to the varnish.
