    JOHN GADSBY CHAPMAN (American, 1808-1889)
    Shepherds
    Oil on canvas
    24 x 36 inches (61.0 x 91.4 cm)

THE JEAN AND GRAHAM DEVOE WILLIFORD CHARITABLE TRUST

    PROVENANCE:
William L. Doyle Galleries, Inc., New York, November 6, 1946.

Born in Alexandria, Virginia, John Gadsby Chapman was a highly productive easel and mural painter, illustrator, and engraver, who lived for most of his life as an expatriate in Italy. Prior to moving there permanently, he studied with Charles Bird King in Washington D.C., studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia, and established himself as a reputable portrait and history painter, dividing his time between New York and Washington D.C. One of his best-known works is a large, colorful mural in the rotunda of the U.S. Capitol, The Baptism of Pocahontas, which brought him great renown for its placement in such a distinguished location. During his 41 years in Italy, Chapman produced color etchings of Rome and expansive scenes of the Italian landscape which were very popular with American tourists owing to their luminosity and descriptive treatment of figures in bucolic surroundings. The present work is a fine example of his campagna painting.

John Gadsby Chapman's two sons, Conrad Wise Chapman and John Linton Chapman, were also landscape painters. A work by the former, a painting of the family dog painted in Rome in 1860, sold in Heritage Auctions's first offering from the Williford Trust, May 15, 2012, lot 64546.

Condition Report*: Original canvas. Paint film in fully stable condition with craquelure commensurate with age--in a vertical pattern. The frame appears to be original as well. Under UV examination there is only very minor evidence of any restoration, largely confined to perimeter inpainting to address frame abrasion, a handful of minor pinpoints in sky, and also some minor strengthening in the shadows under the sheep at the right and possibly in the group in the middle. Framed Dimensions 43.25 X 31 Inches
