Harry Mills Walcott produced this peaceful blond grassy landscape in the hamlet of Barbizon, where the Realist painters had created many of their masterpieces. Walcott's use of a high horizon line shows his awareness of a French landscape convention favored during the last quarter of the 19th century. Born in Torrington, CT, Walcott was the son of a distinguished clergyman and his wife who recognized their son's artistic precociousness and give him a first rate education. He attended the School of the National Academy of Design, where he studied under Will Low and received a classical French Atelier Style education. Walcott won the prestigious Havermeyer Traveling Scholarship in 1894, which allowed him to travel to France for artistic training where he studied at the private Académie Julian under Benjamin Constant and Jean-Paul Laurens. He produced the present landscape during this period.

Upon his return to the United States in 1897, Walcott discovered that his work found great favor. He won a gold medal at the 1901 Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo New York and also medalled at the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis, Missouri. Showing the esteem he must have been held at the time, in 1907 he was on the jury for the Art Institute's Annual Exhibition of American Painting and Sculpture with William Merritt Chase, Joseph DeCamp, Daniel Garber and J. Francis Murphy. He won a medal at the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco. For many years he was on the faculty of the Art Institute of Chicago.
