THE JEAN AND GRAHAM DEVOE WILLIFORD CHARITABLE TRUST

    PROVENANCE:
Butterfields, San Francisco, California, American and California Paintings and Sculpture, June 25, 1998, lot 5148.

This particularly fine example of George Albert Thompson's work in an Impressionist vein dates from 1895, the year he summered in Giverny, France. The dappled light and high-keyed palette are telltale signs of his absorption of Monet's powerful precedent.

Connecticut-born Thompson is best known for the landscapes and coastal scenes, including atmospheric nocturnes, which he painted around Bridgeport, Mystic, and New Haven. He briefly studied with John La Farge, before spending five years in Paris training with a wide variety of artists, among them Merson, Blanc, Courtois, and Girardot. In 1898 he returned to the United States, earned a B.F.A. from the Yale School of Fine Arts, and subsequently taught painting there from 1900 to 1910--the first of several teaching appointments he held during the course of his life. He was a founder, first president, and active thirty-year member of the New Haven Paint & Clay Club. He also exhibited at the National Academy of Design, the Pennsylvania Academy, and the Corcoran Gallery biennials. The Yale University Art Gallery owns five of Thompson's portraits of faculty members, and his work is in the Bruce Museum and other collections.
