    Finishing Touches
    Oil on canvas
    26-1/4 x 19 inches (66.7 x 48.3 cm)

    Lexington Trust, Beverly Hills, California.

A decorative figure painter from Baltimore, Francis Coates Jones trained during the 1870s with elite French academicians, including Henri Lehmann, at the École des Beaux-Arts, and Jules Joseph Lefebvre and William-Adolphe Bouguereau. Both his highly detailed technique and his subjects, usually conversing women in interiors and gardens, evidence the influence of these teachers. The radiant Finishing Touches and Good Friends sensitively capture the bonds of womanhood while equating female beauty with blooming flowers.

Museums that feature Jones' paintings include the Art Institute of Chicago; Gibbes Museum of Art, Charleston; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia; and Richmond Art Museum.
