    PROPERTY FROM A TEXAS MUSEUM

    PROVENANCE:
    The artist;
    The artist's son, gift from the above;
    Acquired by the present owner from the above.

    In 1975, Edmund Osthaus' son Franz wrote from his home in Los Angeles to a Texas museum, offering this painting for their collection: "I do have a very unusual example of his [my father's] ability which was completed about four years before his death in 1928. It is out of the ordinary because it consists of portraits of Harold Lloyd's Great Danes and St. Bernards, six dogs in total. . . I am enclosing a newspaper reproduction of this canvas, which appeared in the Los Angeles Times shortly after the picture was completed. Since this is the only copy I have, I would appreciate your returning it to me (Franz Osthaus, 516 North Wilcox Avenue, Los Angeles, California, 90004, letter dated February 1, 1975).

    The Museum was grateful to accept this large example from the brush of one of America's most celebrated dog painters. Born in Germany and raised in Ohio, Osthaus was a lifelong wildlife enthusiast, hunter and dog lover who settled in Los Angeles in 1911, where he painted dog portraits for many celebrities of various stripes. One of these stars was the actor, comedian, film director and producer, stuntman, screenwriter, Harold Lloyd, who was equally passionate about dogs. His home, "Greenacres" in Beverly Hills, was also home to scores of his beloved breeds. Although no documentation survives concerning the circumstances surrounding the production of this group portrait of six of Lloyd's dogs, the quality of the painting strongly suggests that the animals were painted from life, Osthaus' preferred manner of working throughout his career.
