    PROVENANCE:
PB Eighty-Four, a division of Sotheby Parke Bernet Inc., New York, February 20, 1980, lot 1059.

Known primarily for his work as a stained glass artist, New York artist David Maitland Armstrong was also a painter of landscapes, seascapes and genre scenes. Although he trained initially as a lawyer, and was admitted to the bar in 1862, he soon left his legal career to pursue a profession in art. From 1869-72, the year he painted this scene of a narrow Venetian canal which in its attenuation has the feeling of a lancet window, he served as American Consul in Rome. During his years in Italy he painted and sketched extensively, and a substantial cache of his Italian efforts are preserved in the Preservation Society of Newport County, Rhode Island. In 1878 he served as director of the American section of the Art Department at the Paris Expo for which he received the Legion of Honor. Up until 1882 Armstrong worked as a designer for Tiffany Studios, and in the 1890s opened a glass studio of his own in Washington Square, New York.
