William Lewis Lester (American, 1910-1991)
    Mesquite Trees, 1946
    Oil on board
    20 x 25-1/2 inches (50.8 x 64.8 cm)
Signed, dated, and inscribed on the reverse: William Lester / Dallas Texas / 1946

Like many of Regionalist artist, William Lewis Lester highlights disquieting aspects of society such as poverty while adding personal touches of isolation and uncertainty. Mesquite Trees, with its monochromatic palette creating dramatic shadows, completely reflects this notion of seclusion and disparity. These hauntingly bare trees create a pillared landscape drawing the viewer's eye up and between searching for some relief. However, Lester gives none - purposefully leaving us with an impression of loneliness. Mastering the skill of less-is-more, the artist paints thinly, creating texture by incising paint, giving the viewer less and less. The result is a disquieting, surrealist landscape of rural Texas - the legacy of William Lewis Lester.
