Property of a Gentleman
Willem de Kooning's talents as a draughtsman set him apart from many of his fellow Abstract Expressionists. The figure played a critical role in the creative process and underlies his early development, his famous woman series of the 1950s and the sculptural experiments that he undertook beginning in 1969. Throughout his career there was a tension between classical drawing and individual expression, so vividly captured in this unfilled drawing of two figures prefiguring his interest in sculpture as well as a more typical abstraction based upon the fluidity and freedom of contours.
