    Viktor's notes record that the site depicted in this painting are the ruins at Sounion, Greece, where the partially reconstructed Temple of Poseidon has both round and square columns. The temple sits on the Sounion Cape headland, surrounded on three sides by the sea. Notably the ruins bear the deeply engraved name of English Romantic poet Lord Byron (1788-1824). The site is famous for spectacular searing red sunsets.

    There appears to be possible surface soiling in upper right quadrant as well as a small approx. 1 inch surface scratch in upper far right column; small tear underneath far left figure and approx. 1.5 x .5 inch skinning in upper far left column; framed under glass.
