From his early years of training in Vienna, Viktor loved to explore the theme of animals in his art, a favorite subject of the Viennese ceramic artists. During the early 1950s, while he was deeply involved in architectural sculpture projects for the Cleveland Zoo, he began producing scores of small-scale watercolors of animals on board, which he enlivened with beautiful pen work. To some extent his animal drawings, paintings and sculptures were always more than slightly tinged with glances, postures and attitudes that find easy correlation in human beings as well. But Viktor was a keen observer of animals of all kinds, and regardless of medium, he always managed to bring out something distinctive and also slightly humorous about the creature he was rendering.
