THOMAS E. (REV) MAILS (American 1920-2001)
    Original Illustration
Loud Thunder - Omaha Indian, c.1970
    Oil on board
    24 x 20in.
    Signed lower right

Verso describes this painting as one of thirty-two oil paintings to be printed in full color in a book written and illustrated by the Rev. Thomas E. Mails. Entitled, "THE MYSTIC AMERICANS OF THE PLAINS," the comprehensive book will also contain eight-hundred and forty of the author's pen and ink drawings. It will be published by Doubleday & Company, Inc., New York, in September, 1971.

Verso describes Loud Thunder as being photographed at an Indian Hill Pageant, at Killbourne, Wisconsin, many years ago - wearing the spectacular war shirt of his father. The shirt is painted from the original. It is beaded with broad shoulder and arm bands, and hung with one-hundred-and-four hair locks, commonly called scalplocks by early traders and writers. The Plains Indians believed that the hair was an extension of the soul, and wearing such locks is another example of the Indian's profoundly religious nature.
