RON RILEY (American, 20th Century)
    Sioux Warrior
    Oil on canvas
    40 x 40 inches (101.6 x 101.6 cm)
Signed in monogram lower right corner

Purchased by Paul Gregory from Warriors Work Gallery, Hill City, South Dakota.

Contemporary Sioux painter Ron Riley lives and works near Hill City, South Dakota. Paul displayed this commanding example of his portraiture prominently over the fireplace in the bright, contemporary-style gallery of his Desert Hot Springs home, an addition he built following the death of his last wife, gallerist Kay Obergfel. Roughly half the wall space of his gallery was devoted to imagery and artifacts associated with his American Indian heritage, notably Indian portraits by O.E.L. Graves. He also displayed many of the finest modern prints, paintings and watercolors, including works by Dali, De Chirico, Adrian, and Claude Howell, his monumental Senufo bird, and other African sculpture and ceremonial blades from the collection of Adrian.

Paul recalls, "I bought this painting the day they put it up in the gallery in South Dakota. I shipped it here almost wet. The Sioux man is a real person, not a fantasy. It's so powerful. I love it."

While I regret my inability to personally view the work, you provided an excellent substitute for my not being able to do so, and I look forward to future Heritage auctions.
