Paul Richard Schumann (American, 1876-1946)
    Pair of New Mexico Landscapes
    Oil on board, each
    9 x 13 inches (22.9 x 33.0 cm) (largest)
One signed lower right: Paul R. Schumann

    Uno Langmann Limited, Vancouver, Canada.

Paul Schumann was born in Germany but came to Galveston as a child. He studied under Galveston artist Julius Stockfleth. Schumann was a member of the Southern States Art League, the Texas Fine Arts Association, and the Galveston Art League. Schumann has been called the interpreter of the true Texas gulf coast, most known for his impressionist depictions of seaside life. In contrast, this pair of New Mexico paintings are rare examples of inland subjects. Schumann worked with bright colors and often used a palette knife to add texture and depth to his canvases as seen here. Keeping with the southwestern palette, the artist gives of two views of what appears to be the same homestead against soft pink mountains and vast blue sky, scattering desert fauna throughout adding depth with rich tones of ochre, green, and red. Although only one is signed, both of these works were recently restored allowing for Schumann's bright colors and master brushwork to transport the viewer into the stunning New Mexican landscape.
