In his first artist's book LeRoy Neiman, Art & Lifestyle Neiman wrote about his first trip to Russia in March 1968 about watching and sketching from the window of his room in the National Hotel in Moscow the funeral of Yuri Gagarin, the Soviet space hero: "As the procession solemnly crossed Revolution Square, the changes of light and color on Red Square were deep and rich with beauty...St. Basil's, with it's onion-topped turrets, looming majestic at the top of the Square."
He also wrote: "Ballet is not so much an art as a way of life...its dancers are honored members of the Russian elite. After a performance, balletomanes take control. A handful of frenzied handclappers can detain the lead dancers for repeated curtain calls long after the audience has filed out."
According to his handwritten notes on a drawing reproduced in the book, he was watching the Bolshoi Ballet at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow. No doubt the painting "Russian Cossack" was done during this same time, perhaps soon after he returned to his studio in New York.
