More Information:
About this work, the artist writes:
In the fall of 1969 I was a senior in undergraduate art school at UCLA and Diebenkorn was on the graduate faculty. Dick had a show in downtown LA and I responded to the work on many levels. After acceptance to the graduate program there I asked him if we could work together and he complied even agreeing to be the chair of my thesis committee.
On one studio visit he came into my studio on the 8th floor of the Dickson Art Center. On a table I had a huge Edward Hopper book open to his "Night Café."
Dick tapped on the picture and said, "You know something about me." I hadn't made that exact comparison, but I understood what he was revealing. The point of the picture he had indicated was the meeting of the two storefronts the café and the brownstone storefront across the street.
Anyone who is familiar with the Ocean Park Series will immediately recognize this section of the Hopper work turned into an abstract idiom for Diebenkorns personal expression. It contains all the plastic elements that he would use over and over again, transparency, reflection, light and shadow, Color phenomena, etc.
