Description

    Emily Guthrie Smith (American, 1909-1986)
    Enchantment
    Oil on canvas
    24 x 20 inches (61.0 x 50.8 cm)
Signed lower right: Emily Guthrie Smith

Fort Worth artist Emily Guthrie Smith studied at Texas Woman's University, the University of Oklahoma, and the Art Students League of New York. She participated in many exhibitions, including the Texas Annual at Fort Worth in 1929, the Texas General in 1942, and the Texas Fine Arts Association in 1943, and later became a teacher. Smith was perhaps best known as a portraitist and landscape painter specializing in pastel works, for which she was inducted into the Pastel Society of America Hall of Fame 1984. Oil paintings by Smith like Cloud Shadows are highly sought after by collectors and abstract oils are even more rare. Completely abstract, Enchantment reveals Smith's interest in Modernism, which is much more strongly associated with her contemporaries in The Fort Worth Circle than herself. It shows her work was far more complex than her reputation for working in traditional styles might suggest.
