In a 2001 interview with David Bates, Philip Van Keuren stated that the French word for "still life," nature morte, translates as "dead nature." He then pointed out that Bates's "still life" paintings are anything but. There is a rich, sculptural quality to the painting. A vibrant green wall serves as a background to still life in this work where a glass vase filled with oleander sits on a table in front of an open window. Next to the vase, a half of a lime rests beside a horizontal, black-handled kitchen knife that had just sliced it. In describing the series of still lifes to which this work belongs, Bates admits, "There's a heavy-handedness and chunkiness in this work that feels very American to me. Kind of brash, bigger-than-life, don't-go-by-all-the-rules feeling - which is maybe very American."
