This painting of a Breton girl descending a hill at dusk, shouldering a yoke with two heavy buckets, is a scarce French-period work by the noted American marine painter and illustrator Carlton Chapman. Chapman specialized in depictions of ships at sea, particularly marine battles, many of which he witnessed firsthand as an illustrator/correspondent for Harper's Weekly. His career choice seemed to have been almost preordained because he came from a line of New England shipbuilders. Although born in the Midwest in New London, Ohio, he spent much of his youth in and around the family shipyards in Maine. Around 1876 he ran away from home to work on a Great Lakes schooner for a year, and following this excursion attended Oberlin College then moved to New York to study art from 1882 to 1884 at the National Academy and Art Students League. In 1886, the year he produced the present work, he went to Paris where he attended the Academie Julian, working under Boulanger and Lefebvre, but returned to America within the year to concentrate on marine painting and exhibit extensively. His paintings were awarded medals at Boston in 1892, at Chicago in 1893, Atlanta in 1894, Buffalo in 1901, and at Charleston in 1902. Chapman was also a published poet, skilled watercolorist and etcher. Indeed, the present work likely served as the original plein air inspiration for an etching he produced a year later, in 1887, showing this same brow of a hill in Brittany, but in reverse and without the tall tower and figure. Entitled Home at Dusk, the related etching was printed by Radke Laudner & Son, New York, in 1888.
