    Description

Attributed to Hugh Newell (American, 1830-1915) after Rosa Bonheur (French, 1822-1899)
    The Horse Fair, 1858
    Oil on canvas
    20-1/2 x 43 inches (52.1 x 109.2 cm)
Signed and dated lower right: H. Newell 1858

    PROVENANCE:
From the private collection of Lois Stephens, Olympic Equestrian, Greenbrier Sporting Club,
    West Virginia.

    NOTE:
Lois Stephens was a dressage trainer, rider, and Hanoverian horse breeder.

This painting is a faithful, reduced scale copy of Rosa Bonheur's celebrated 1852 painting, The Horse Fair, now in the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. The artist Hugh Newell, to whom the copy is attributed, studied in Antwerp, Paris and London, and would have had access to Bonheur's massive painting at several junctures while it made the rounds to many European and British cities between 1853 and 1857. In 1857 The Horse Fair crossed the Atlantic where it was on view in New York from 1857-1858.

Condition Report*: Wax lined canvas. Paint film is in very good condition with only two noticeable flaws visible under normal lighting conditions: a 1 1/2 inch horizontal scratch in the upper left quadrant of the sky and a shorter 3/4 inch horizontal scratch in the middle of the sky on a gray cloud. Under Uv examination, the painting retains an old degraded varnish which has been selectively cleaned. There are only a few touches of inpaint, primarily along the midsection, and applied horizontally as if to suggest it is addressing small losses aligning with the canvas's strainer.
