Walter MacEwen achieved artistic success on both sides of the Atlantic painting Dutch subjects that became his particular specialty. His gift for mood and portraiture resonate in works such as The Old Guard of the House of Orange, a fine, mature example of his work as a Dutch history painter. As scholar Holly Koons McCullough has noted, the present work belongs to a series MacEwen produced in the 1890s, which also included a monumental canvas depicting William and Mary that was tragically destroyed by fire. To date, this sensitive portrayal of a man who has grown old in his line of duty, bearing the Orange standard, is the only work from this ambitious narrative series by MacEwen that can be traced.
