Robert Frederick Blum was a major figure painter and illustrator who emerged from the vital artistic milieu of mid 19th-century Cincinnati, OH. Following studies at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia, Blum met up with Cincinnatian Frank Duveneck and his so-called "Duveneck boys" in Venice, when the group was associated with James Abbot McNeil Whistler. Blum was profoundly influenced by Whistler, whose work had a marked impact on his interest in using watercolor, etching and pastel impressionistically, and depicting figures as though they were enveloped in light and atmosphere. Following the significant meeting with Whistler, Blum went to Paris to study at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, where he gained an exceptionally firm a grasp of academic pictorial structure. In the present work, the marriage of the Whistlerian focus on fluid and spontaneous marks with an armature of solid anatomy creates a riveting portrait. Many thanks to Dr. Bruce Weber for confirming that this is a self-portrait by Blum.

Condition Report*: Paint film in very good stable condition. Under UV examination there is some inpaint, confined largely to the background particularly in the white areas at the corners and edges of the painting, where it appears as fine stippling, dots and vertical strokes very carefully done. There is very minimal inpainting on the figure, including several small dotes in the sitter's hair, on his right ear, tie and on the left of his jacket.  Otherwise no evidence of any conservation or restoration.  Framed Dimensions 16 X 13 Inches
