    A Summer Day
is John William Casilear at his best, meriting his colleague Benjamin Champney's accolades: "His skies are luminous, and his distances tender and melting. . . there is a poetic pastoral charm in all his work."¹ A leader in the Hudson River School Luminist movement, Casilear found his muse in the landscapes of upstate New York and New Hampshire, and this painting likely illustrates one of his favorite regions, the Genesee Valley near Rochester. During the 1840s while on a trip to Europe, Casilear's friend and mentor Asher B. Durand introduced him to the paintings of Claude Lorrain, who became a lasting influence. Here, the bucolic setting with a farmhouse, proportioned trees, soft light, and billowing clouds pay special tribute to Lorrain. In addition, Casilear's detailed rendering of foreground objects, such as the grass-covered rocks and speckled cows, points to his early training as an engraver. A Summer Day exemplifies two major Casilear hallmarks, cattle-filled scenes and subtle light effects, including rain-streaked clouds on the horizon. This is the world seen by the second generation of Hudson River School painters, where nature, no longer unruly and dangerous, has conformed to man's needs.
