    PROVENANCE:

Collection of Clarence N. Hagins, Brooklyn, 1967 (inscription verso).

Titled by Henry O. Tanner's longtime New York dealer, Erwin S. Barrie of Grand Central Art Galleries, Country Scene in the Adirondacks stylistically relates more to the artist's French landscapes from the early 1910s. Tanner painted in the Adirondacks from the late 1870s through the mid 1880s, on three different trips to Wardner's Rainbow Lake Inn, a sanatorium where he recovered from various illnesses. His pastoral images from this period, clustering farm boys and sheep in verdant meadows, exhibit the influence of Thomas Eakins and Winslow Homer, as well as Arthur Fitzwilliam Tait, whose paintings were on display at the inn. It was not until Tanner began visiting France, as early as the 1890s, that he experimented with the Post-Impressionist techniques of non-local color and independent line. With its vivid palette, gestural brushwork, and patchwork-like bands of color, Country Scene in the Adirondacks recalls Landscape (France 1914) and others of Tanner's paintings from 1910 to 1914, "the most innovative period of [his] art" (D. F. Mosby, Henry Ossawa Tanner, Philadelphia, 1991, p. 240).

Gate of Tangiers, also originally part of the Grand Central Art Galleries inventory, is similar to the slightly larger etching Gate in Tangier, each depicting shrouded Muslims flanking an arched entryway to the famous Moroccan Casbah. Tanner possibly designed the smaller etching as a bookplate, suggested by its 4 x 5" format as well as the white band at the top of the print, a space for the owner's name. During his trips to North Africa, from 1908 to 1914, Tanner frequently turned to architectural subjects featuring the Moorish arch, in both Impressionist-hued paintings and other etchings, such as Mosque, Tangier.

Both lots are accompanied by letters of authenticity, dated 1968 and 1971 respectively, from Henry O. Tanner's dealer, Erwin S. Barrie, Director and Manager of Grand Central Art Galleries, New York.
