Frederick Carl Frieseke is recognized as one of America's preeminent Impressionists, renowned for his high-keyed palette, thick impasto, and brilliant visual display of color and light. Dr. William H. Gerdts has noted that "it was Frieseke who introduced into the repertory of Giverny painting the concern for rich, decorative patterns, related to the art of Édouard Vuillard, Pierre Bonnard, and the other Nabi painters. There are patterns of furniture, patterns of parasols, patterns of fabric and wall coverings, patterns of light and shade, and patterns of flowers, all played off one another in bright sunshine...." (W.H. Gerdts, Monet's Giverny: An Impressionist Colony, New York, 1993, p. 172)
Winter Morning/Winter Sunrise is a rare example of the artist's interpretation of snow in winter. Here, Frieseke conveys the temporal quality of the scene through his careful rendering of the ice and snow lying motionless upon a quiet village in the early hours of day. Sun begins to break through the clouds, and dapples the scene with interspersing bands of sunlight and shadow. Painted from a high vantage point, Frieseke gives the composition a sense of scale and proportion: The aerial view helps to define the spatial openness of the middle ground and foreground. Houses and trees intermingle to create a pattern of colors and shapes, forming a horizontal band that integrates into the backdrop of expansive snow. The result is a dazzling Impressionistic interpretation of winter that demonstrates Frieseke's keen observation of light and color.
This painting will be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonné of Frieseke's work being compiled by Nicholas Kilmer, the artist's grandson, and sponsored by Hollis Taggart Galleries, New York.
