    E. I. (Eanger Irving) Couse's interest in painting and drawing American Indians began during the 1890s when he encountered the local Ojibwe -- more commonly known as the Chippewa -- tribes along the banks of Lake Michigan. Prior to this time, he had studied in Paris with William A. Bouguereau at the Académie Julian, where he met Virginia Walker, the daughter of an American rancher. They married in Paris in 1889.

In 1891, Couse and Virginia left Paris for an extended stay at Virginia's parents' ranch, which was located in southern Washington's Klickitat County along the Columbia River. The ranch became the ideal place for Couse to begin painting landscapes and American Indian subjects. For models, he used local Klickitat, Rock Creek, Pine Creek, and Umatilla Indians, along with his wife, Virginia.

Couse painted Umatilla Wickiup with Waiting Pony along the Columbia River in Washington State around 1897. This intimate scene captures the rugged life of a young Umatilla Indian girl holding the family horse in front of their wickiup - also called a wetu or wigwam - a structure still used today for ceremonial purposes. Couse's early plein-air works show both a refined approach and a developing style following his studies at the Académie Julian.

The present work will be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonné being prepared by Virginia Couse Leavitt.
