    Description

    DAVID BIRDSEY WALKLEY (American, 1849-1934)
    Picking Flowers
    Oil on canvas
    27 x 20 inches (68.6 x 50.8 cm)
    Signed lower right: Walkley

THE JEAN AND GRAHAM DEVOE WILLIFORD CHARITABLE TRUST

    PROVENANCE:
Wunderly Bros. Fine Art, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (label verso).

This painting bears a 19th-century label from the Pittsburgh art gallery, Wunderly Brothers Fine Art. It probably was a work the Ohio-born artist sold through the gallery during the years he taught at the Pittsburgh School of Design (1879-1884), immediately following his studies in Paris at the Academie Mosler and the Academie Julian, where he studied with Gustave Boulanger and Jules Lefebvre. Following his tenure in Pittsburgh, Walkley married one of his students and the couple moved to New York where he studied at the Art Students League and began exhibiting his landscapes, figures and genre paintings at the Salmagundi Club, the Society of American Artists, the Pittsburgh Art Association, the National Academy, the Philadelphia Art Club, the 1893 Chicago Columbian Exposition, the Corcoran Gallery, and the Art Institute of Chicago, as well as at independent shows in New York, Philadelphia, and Pittsburgh. Later in life he lived and worked in Connecticut.

Condition Report*: Original canvas (of a medium coarse weave) and stretcher bars. Beautiful gilt frame probably original. There is a slight little buckle in the canvas at lower left, perhaps stemming from the stretcher key having pushed against it from behind. Under UV examination there is very little evidence of any paint that fluoresces apart from a line of light paint outlining the profile of the woman. Framed Dimensions 34.25 X 27.5 Inches
