This tranquil sunrise above a grassy French riverbank is an early work by Corwin Linson, a gifted painter-illustrator, who trained in Paris at the Academie Julian and the École des Beaux-Arts under Gerome, Laurent, Constant and Lefebvre. Although he distinguished himself as landscapist in particular, and as an illustrator for the major monthly illustrated magazines of the period, today he is perhaps best known for his important association with the writer Stephen Crane, author of the Civil War novella The Red Badge of Courage, who was his friend and roommate in New York. It was in Linson's rooms that Crane first read about the war in Century magazine, declaring, "These fellows spout eternally of what they did, but they never say how they feel. They are as emotionless as rocks," thereby announcing his intent to write his own remedy--which Corwin Linson illustrated. After traveling widely and illustrating many texts dealing with the working conditions of the underclasses, Linson settled in the borough of Atlantic Highlands, New Jersey, on Raritan Bay, where from 1920 he devoted the remainder of his life to painting.

Condition Report*: Unlined canvas; light surface dirt; several dots of surface residue never center left edge; small surface accretion near center right bottom edge; draw/undulation in upper left and upper right corners of canvas; small bulge/raised dent in upper right corner; there does not appear to be inpainting under UV exam, but old varnish layer makes painting surface difficult to read. Framed Dimensions 25.25 X 29.25 Inches

It would indeed have been much simpler to work with a local auction house, and we had local options. But we never once regretted going with Heritage.
