    CHARLES ALLEN WINTER (American, 1869-1942)
    Portrait of a Woman
    Oil on canvas
    12 x 10 inches (30.5 x 25.4 cm)
Signed lower left: Charles A. Winter

    PROVENANCE:
    Christie's stamp (verso).

Charles Allen Winter was a noted illustrator for Collier's, Cosmopolitan, Hearst's magazines, and The Masses, as well as a landscape and marine painter. He studied initially at the Cincinnati Art Academy with Vincent Nowottny, Lewis Lutz, and Thomas S. Noble, before winning a three-year, all expense paid foreign scholarship competition which took him to Paris. There he studied at the Académie Julian under Adolphe-William Bouguereau and Gabriel Ferrier. He spent eight months of the three year scholarship in Rome. While abroad he exhibited at the Paris Salons.

At the completion of the three years, the artist extended his stay in Europe until he received an invitation to teach a portrait class at the St. Louis School of Fine Art, Missouri, where he remained for three years. In 1901 Winter moved to New York and took a studio at 8 East 59th Street, where he lived when he married the artist Alice Mary Beach in 1904. His mature work is characterized by bright colors and impressionist brushwork. The present painting is a successful combination of Winter's ability as an illustrator to design an arresting composition, and his skills as a fine artist to create a sense of luminosity through judiciously chosen color and brushwork. It strongly resembles the work of the Symbolists which he had doubtless encountered during his studies in Paris.

Condition Report*: Vertical craquelure otherwise very nice condition. Under  UV there's a mottled patterning across the surface, possibly from varnish. UV reveals extremely minor inpainting: one dot of inpainting along left edge, and at upper right corner, and along lower right edge - all from frame abrasion. One tiny dot of inpaint on right side of chin and a spec on her neck. Otherwise no restoration. Framed Dimensions 17.25 X 15.25 Inches
