    18 x 30 inches (45.7 x 76.2 cm)
    Titled, signed, and dated verso: Sunset, Silver Lake Cottonwood Canon [sic], Utah / Alfred Lambourne 1880

    PROVENANCE:
    Private collection (possibly a gift from renowned artist, Harry Jackson);
    Thence by decent through the family.

    NOTE:
    Born in England in 1850, Alfred Lambourne and his family moved to the American West with the Mormon pioneers in the 1860s. While he is primarily remembered for his romantic paintings, he displayed great talents as a writer creating poetry and short fiction for Mormon periodicals. In 1871, he accompanied Brigham Young to Zion Canyon and allegedly made the first paintings of the area. Lambourne was also responsible for naming the Cottonwood lakes above Salt Lake City; Lake Martha for his mother, Lake Minnie for his wife, and Lake Lillian for his daughter.

    Lambourne was highly praised for his painting abilities by the 1880s and was one of the first artists to visit and paint Yellowstone, the Grand Canyon, and Yosemite. As his popularity grew so did his demand for commissions. One of the most prominent business men of Utah, and real estate tycoon of Utah and California, was Joseph Robinson Walker who asked Lambourne to paint Moonlight, Silver Lake, Cottonwood Canyon, 1880 (now housed in the Springville Museum of Art). Similar to Sunset, Silver Lake, Cottonwood Canyon, 1880, the picture measures 17 x 30 inches and depicts a boat floating quietly amidst a moody atmosphere. It was during these years that Lambourne reported that the "lonely solemnity of Utah's scenery moved him". (Utah Art, 36).
