    Amos Sewell (American, 1901-1983)
    The Surprise Party, The Saturday Evening Post interior illustration, November-December 1990
    Oil on board
    21-1/2 x 16-1/2 inches (54.6 x 41.9 cm)

    PROVENANCE:
    The artist;
    Private collection, gift from the above;
    By descent to the present owner, 1991.

    As with many examples of classic Golden Age Illustration, the backstory behind The Surprise Party is as interesting as the work itself: The present owner's father met Amos Sewell when he was just ten years old. At the time, the young boy went door to door in New York City, in an attempt to raise funds for his class' surprise party, being thrown for their very pregnant teacher. This was the second party that the class attempted to organize, as on their first try, the teacher had called out sick. The young boy explained the situation to his neighbor, Sewell. The artist loved the story so much, he used it as a basis for this illustration. Subsequently Sewell gifted the work to the owner's father.

    The present work was published in The Saturday Evening Post posthumously in 1990.
