    PROVENANCE:
    Gruenebaum Gallery, New York;
    Private collection, Dallas, Texas.

    Elaine de Kooning's celebrated Bacchus series originated in the early 1970's while she was visiting the Luxembourg Gardens in Paris. She happened upon a monumental bronze sculpture bathed in dappled sunlight against a background of shimmering yellow green leaves. The sculpture, known as Bacchus, portrays a group of drunken figures trying to hold the inebriated Silenus from falling off a donkey and tumbling to the ground.

    As a consummate "Action Painter", Elaine began making drawings of the sculpture in situ on repeated occasions starting as early as 1974, accentuating the immediacy of the moment and the sense of imminent change. Each year, when she returned to her studio in New York, she embarked on painting a series of watercolors and canvases, each informed differently by the differences in light and shadow she had observed. Her brushstrokes dance around the figures, sweeping up and around, in and out, constantly reshaping contours resulting in a transcendence of energy throughout the entire painting. This series signaled Elaine's embrace of acrylics as her preferred medium. In all, she created more than 40 finished drawings and watercolors and 60 paintings over a 10 year period. Examples of her Bacchus paintings can be found in the Georgia Museum of Art, Athens; the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington, D.C.; and other museums.
