    Sotheby's Arcade, New York, September 30, 1997, lot 224.

Graham Williford paid twelve times the auction estimate in 1997 for this impressionistic scene by Edward Hamilton which records the reflections of a slice of a French village and its stone bridge in a river. Williford was particularly drawn to works such as this--painted by Americans who were training in France during the last quarter of the 19th century--and often chased them relentlessly at auction. Hamilton was an Ohio-born painter who became a an important member of the Boston School. In Paris he studied at the École de Beaux-Arts Under Bouguereau and the Academie Julian, and in the United States at the Massachusetts Normal Art School and the Rhode Island School of Design.

From 1892 he set up a studio on Boylston Street in Boston, and was a member of Boston's Copley Society and St. Botolph Club. Noted in particular for his garden landscapes rendered in delicate pinks and blues, as well as his accomplished genre and portrait paintings, Hamilton exhibited at the Boston Art Club, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and was a medal recipient at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco in 1915. He was a longtime teacher at the Massachusetts Normal Art School (1892-1942) and ran a summer school in Kingston, Massachusetts.
