    Description

    Double Frog Pendant
    Veraguas, Chiriquí, Diquís
    A.D. 700 - 1500
    Gold, Weight 123.76 grams
    Height 4 5/8 in. Width 2 11/16 in.

    This massive pendant shows two frog supernaturals joined at mid-body as though moving in opposite directions from a central energy source. The integrally-cast suspension loops indicate a vertical orientation when worn. The bulging-eyed heads have unusual three-ribboned nostril emanations and large S-shaped streams emerge in opposing directions from their mouths. These are punctuated by coiled "bubbles" and end in serpent heads. The front feet are flipper-like and are shown in the action of propelling the creatures apart, imparting unusual dynamism. Casting gate stubs are visible at the mouths of the two lower serpents. Condition is excellent.

    The lot is sold with a statement of authenticity from the distinguished expert Robert Sonin.
