RARE TYRANNOSAURID TOOTH

Judith River Formation, Alberta, Canada
A rather rare dinosaur, the Daspletosaurus has been found in only one locality. Although unnamed, possible relatives of the same genus have been discovered further afield across North America. A tyrannosaurid theropod, it was smaller than its contemporary cousins the Albertosaurus and the T-Rex (reaching up to 30 feet in length in adulthood), but shared their characteristic anatomical features of a large heavy head, short forearms and a long heavy tail that acted as a counterweight. But the business end of the creature was its some two dozen vicious teeth, of which the present specimen is a fine example. Ovular in section it retains good enamel coverage in a warm pale gray-brown, with excellent serrations and a good root section and measures 2 ½ inches along the curve with no restoration.
