DINOSAUR SKULL WITH INCREDIBLE "BRAIN CAST"
    Maiasaura sp.
    Cretaceous, Hell Creek Formation
    Montana, USA

The well-known hadrosaurid ("duck billed") Dinosaur Maiasaura, popularized by the work of famous Paleontologist Jack Horner in the Two Medicine Formation at the "Egg Mountain" site near Choteau, Montana, exhibited nesting and nurturing behavior relative to its young. Maiasaura peeblesorum, the single described species of this genus was the subject of Dr. Horner's work. However, this adult was probably related to the common species, but actually an earlier example. The skull is nearly complete, with approximately 85 percent original bone material and only minor restoration in the area between the beak and eye sockets. This skull, wonderfully displayed on a custom metal base, has an upper and lower jaw, which are both in good condition. The upper jaw has all teeth present and intact. The prepared skull measures about 25 inches (63.50 cm) in length and is simply amazing when perched on its custom base.

Unbelievably, there is a bonus with this skull - the fully preserved actual "brain cast" from the Dinosaur! The cast measures 5.5 inches (13.97 cm) and exhibits well-preserved, large, rounded, olfactory lobes. Although hard to believe, the story of the discovery only adds credibility to this unusual fossil specimen. As the skull was being excavated, by the fossil collector who discovered it, his young daughter found an "odd-shaped" object in the same layer, while playing next to him. It was the cast of the brain - perfectly preserved by sediment that seeped into the brain case during the fossilization process - before the skull disarticulated in the ground. The brain case was still partially embedded in solid rock when preparation began, and there are photos showing how the brain cast fit into the brain case and skull prior to the skull being reassembled. The brain cast fits snugly and naturally into the bone cavity inside the Dinosaur skull.
    Overall measurements: 31.5 x 13.5 x 23.5 inches (80 x 34.29 x 59.69 cm)
