    Description

    SCUNTHORPE AMMONITE
    Asteroceras sp.
    Jurassic
Lower Lias Formation, Frodingham Ironstone Quarry, Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire, England
This classic ammonite is from the famed Frodingham Ironstone Quarry. Painstakingly removed from the hard ironstone that had encapsulated it, this ammonite has been hand-polished to reveal its complicated pyritized suture lines, in stark contrast with the brilliant white calcite body of the ammonite itself. The white calcite body has pale celery green tones with hints of pink, excellent polish and well defined ribbing. A rare classic ammonite because: the quarries are no longer being worked, specimens this large are scarce, and the amount of hand labor involved with preparation is intense. This fine specimen measures 9 x 7 ¾ inches, is 1 ½ inches thick and has a natural ironstone matrix back.
