Description
T-REX VERTABRATyrannosaurus Rex
Cretaceous
Hell Creek Formation, Baisch Ranch, Glendive, MT
When one considers that the T-Rex, the most fearsome of all the dinosaurs, had almost eighty of this massive vertebrae along its spine and tail, one begins to get an impression of the massive size of the terrifying predator - over 40 feet in length. Such vertebrae have provided valuable clues to the T-Rex's microscopic anatomy, built as they are along a "honeycomb" structure, suggesting that the traditional estimates of the animal's weight at 6 to 8 tons may be too high; the unusual breathing system whereby a complex system of passages, pockets and sacs forced air through the lungs in a sort of one-way system also contributed to the high speeds that the T-Rex could attain, terrifyingly swift for such an enormous and ferocious animal. The present example has undergone some sympathetic restoration, mostly to the processes, to return it to an accurately representative state. It measures 10¾ x 8½ x 9½ inches.
