    Description

    FINE SABER-TOOTHED CAT SKULL CAST
    Smilodon fatalis
    Pleistocene
Rancho La Brea Formation, Los Angeles, California
Official State Fossil of California, the Great Saber-toothed Smilodon fatalis is the epitome of the North American fossil. It roamed across the entire New World throughout the last Ice Age 1.8 million to 10,000 years ago, but their remains are found nowhere else outside of the Americas. A member of the family of true cats (Felidae) its most striking and unique features are found in the skull and teeth, instantly recognizable from the giant curving upper canines that provide its name. It is presumed that these fangs were used to immobilize prey that might have been much larger and stronger than the cat itself. Saber-toothed cat fossils are highly prized, the most desirable being those excavated from the La Brea Tar Formation in California, but their immense rarity and frequently inferior condition and incompleteness make them an impossible dream for most collectors. A fine substitute is this exquisitely executed cast, finished with the lovely dark brown woody patina characteristic of tar-buried fossils, and boasting lovely ivory-colored teeth with 7½-inch long sabers, 12½ inches high overall on a custom metal display stand.
