A Pair of Louis XV Style Gilt Bronze Chenets

After a model by Quentin-Claude Pitoin (circa 1725-1777), Paris, France
    Early Nineteenth Century
    Gilt bronze
    13.25 in. high x 19 in. wide x 11 in. deep

Each on a naturalistic base, cast with C-scrolls and scrolling foliage, one with a boar, the other with a stag.

Inspired by the original models by Quentin-Claude Pitoin who supplied bronzes d'ameublement to the Court from 1763 until his death, examples were supplied in 1772 to the salon of Madame du Barry at Fontainebleau and are now in the Musee du Louvre. Louis XVI had another pair of this model in his library at Versailles which subsequently were moved to the Palais de Luxembourg. (See P. Verlet, Les Bronzes Dores Francais du XVIII Siecle, Paris, 1987, p. 59, no. 51-52).
